Online firearm reviews carry commercial weight, and the industry occasionally gets reminded that review content can become part of a legal record. That is a sentence of context, not the subject here. The useful question for a buyer is different: when every rifle in a price band gets called reliable and accurate, how do you separate a rifle that will hold up over 10,000 rounds from one that will loosen, key, or crack at 3,000?
The Smith & Wesson M&P15 Sport III is a good test case because it sits in the entry tier where marketing language does the most work and the specification sheet does the most telling.
The numbers that define the rifle

- Pull the BCG and look at the gas key. The two screws should be staked into the key with visible metal displaced against the screw heads.
- Check the barrel extension index and the gas block alignment. A gas block rotated even slightly will throw short-stroking problems that read as ammunition problems.
- Verify the castle nut is staked to the end plate. Unstaked castle nuts back off under recoil and produce the mystery failures people blame on magazines.
- Measure headspace behavior indirectly by checking for a clean bolt face and even locking lug contact after 200 rounds.
- Function check the safety on an empty gun in both positions before loading.

- Bolt carrier group quality first. Look for MPI and HPT marked bolts and a staked key.

Store the rifle with a light coat of oil and a desiccant pack in the safe, and avoid foam-lined cases for long term storage because foam holds moisture against metal.

How many rounds per year will you actually fire, since that sets the barrel and BCG quality you need? Will a suppressor be part of the plan within three years, since that changes gas system and muzzle device choices now instead of later.
