Home building has moved from garage hobby to a mainstream path into gun ownership, and the gear supporting it has matured fast. Legal treatment of unserialized firearms continues to shift by state, so confirm your local rules before you buy anything. What follows is about the hardware itself: what separates a build that runs for 10,000 rounds from one that turns into a parts drawer.

Two Build Paths, Two Very Different Skill Demands

Most first builds fall into one of two categories, and they are not interchangeable in terms of tooling, tolerance, or failure mode.

  • AR-15 pattern lower receiver. Whether you start from a complete stripped lower or an 80 percent forging, the machining work is limited to the fire control pocket, trigger slot, and pin holes. Tolerances matter but the parts interface is standardized. Mil-spec trigger and hammer pins measure 0.154 inch, Colt-pattern large-pin receivers use 0.170 inch, and the takedown and pivot pins are 0.250 inch. Mixing those is the single most common fitment mistake.
  • Polymer pistol frame, typically Glock-pattern. Here the work is finishing rail channels and locking block seats, then installing steel rails and pins to correct depth. There is no headspace work, but slide-to-frame fit and trigger bar geometry are unforgiving. A frame that is 0.010 inch out of spec at the rails produces light primer strikes or failures to return to battery.

Material Choices That Actually Change Durability

Aluminum grade is not marketing copy. Forged 7075-T6 runs roughly 83,000 psi ultimate tensile strength, while 6061-T6 billet sits near 45,000 psi. For a lower receiver carrying buffer tube leverage from a collapsed stock and repeated takedown cycles, 7075-T6 forged is the default for hard-use rifles. Billet 6061 lowers are dimensionally accurate and fine for range guns, and they usually cost less, but they are the wrong answer for a duty or patrol-style build that gets dropped from a truck bed.

On the pistol side, glass-reinforced polymer frames resist solvent exposure and cold weather better than unfilled nylon. If you hunt in temperatures that drop below freezing or carry in coastal humidity, that reinforcement matters more than grip texture aesthetics.

Torque and Assembly Numbers Worth Writing Down

Builds fail at interfaces, not in the middle of parts. Keep these values on hand:

  • Castle nut: 38 to 42 ft-lb, then stake in two places.
  • Barrel nut: 30 to 80 ft-lb, cycled three times before final timing to the gas tube.
  • Receiver extension: mil-spec tubes measure 1.148 inch outside diameter, commercial 1.168 inch. Buffer tube and stock must match or the stock will rattle.
  • Buffer weights: standard carbine 3.0 oz, H 3.8 oz, H2 approximately 4.6 oz, H3 approximately 5.4 oz. A 10.5 inch or 11.5 inch barrel with a carbine-length gas system usually wants H2 or heavier to control bolt velocity.

Headspace on any barrel and bolt pairing should be verified with go and no-go gauges before the first live round. This is a five dollar step that prevents a catastrophic one.

Barrel Length, Velocity, and Honest Expectations

Barrel length drives more of your practical performance than any cosmetic upgrade. A 20 inch 5.56 barrel pushes 55 grain M193-type loads around 3,200 to 3,250 fps. Cut to 16 inches and you land near 3,000 to 3,050 fps. A 10.5 inch barrel typically falls to the 2,600 to 2,700 fps range, which pushes fragmentation-dependent loads outside their reliable velocity window past short distances. For hunting or general defensive use, 16 inches remains the balanced choice, and a 14.5 inch barrel with a permanently attached muzzle device to reach 16.1 inches is the common workaround.

Muzzle threading matters for compatibility. 5.56 barrels use 1/2×28, .308 and 300 Blackout typically use 5/8×24, and most 9mm pistol barrels use 1/2×28. Confirm thread pitch before ordering a brake or a can. Pistol Frame Fitment and Optic Compatibility

Glock-pattern frames are sized around specific slide lengths. A Gen 3 G19-size build uses a 4.02 inch barrel with 15+1 capacity in 9mm and runs about 21 oz unloaded. Ammunition selection should follow barrel length. From a 4 inch 9mm barrel, 115 grain loads typically run near 1,150 fps, 124 grain near 1,100 fps, and 147 grain subsonic loads near 990 fps. Subsonic 147 grain is the correct pairing if suppressed shooting is the goal.

A Five-Point Pre-Purchase Checklist

  1. Legality first. Verify your state’s current position on home manufacture, marking requirements, and transfer rules. Rules change.
  2. Tooling honesty. An 80 percent build needs a jig, a drill press with a vise, and quality bits. A stripped receiver build needs an armorer’s wrench, torque wrench, and punch set.
  3. Parts sourcing consistency. Mixing pin sizes, buffer tube types, and gas system lengths accounts for most build failures.
  4. Documentation. Many builders voluntarily mark their builds using the standard federal dimensions of 1/16 inch minimum character height and 0.003 inch minimum depth, which also makes insurance claims and recovery after theft far simpler.
  5. Function test plan. 100 rounds of your intended carry or defensive load, fired from at least two magazines, before you trust the gun for anything serious.

Ownership Lifecycle, Storage, and Transport

A home build needs the same maintenance discipline as a factory gun, with more attention in the first 500 rounds. Check castle nut staking, gas key staking, and grip screw tension at 100, 300, and 500 rounds. Polymer frames should be inspected at the rail seats for movement or peening.

For storage, keep relative humidity under about 50 percent inside the safe. Aluminum receivers resist corrosion better than carbon steel barrels and bolt carriers, which is where rust shows up first. Deciding Your First Build Path

If you want a general purpose rifle you can hunt, train, and defend with, start with a forged 7075-T6 lower, a 16 inch barrel with a mid-length gas system, and an H buffer.
