Suppressor buying has gotten easier and busier at the same time. Paperwork timelines have compressed, dealer inventories are deeper than they have been in years, and the shifting regulatory picture has pushed a lot of first time buyers off the fence. Rules around transfers are still settling, so confirm current requirements with your dealer before you commit money. What does not change is the hardware decision, and that is where most buyers get it wrong.

A suppressor is a permanent purchase in practice. You will mount it on multiple hosts, carry it in the field, clean around it, and store it for decades. Picking the wrong bore diameter, mount standard, or weight class costs more over time than saving a hundred dollars at the counter.

Start With Thread Pitch and Bore Diameter

Before you compare sound numbers, inventory your muzzle threads. The common pitches in the United States are:

  • 1/2×28 for .223/5.56 rifles, most 9mm pistols, and nearly all .22 LR hosts
  • 5/8×24 for .30 caliber rifles including .308 Winchester, 6.5 Creedmoor, and .300 Blackout
  • .578×28 for .45 ACP pistols
  • M13.5×1 LH and M14x1 LH on many imported pistols and rifles
  • 1.375×24, the HUB standard used for modular rear caps rather than direct muzzle threading

Bore diameter sets your ceiling. A .30 caliber can will run 5.56, 9mm subsonic, and .300 Blackout with the right mount, and it will be quieter on the big cartridge than a dedicated 5.56 can is on 5.56. It will also give up a few decibels on the smaller bore compared to a tight .22 caliber tube. If you own one rifle, buy to the bore. If you own five, buy the largest bore you shoot regularly and accept the small penalty on the smaller ones.

Weight and Length Are Handling Decisions

Numbers matter here more than most buyers expect. A typical titanium .30 caliber can in the 6.5 to 7.5 inch range runs roughly 11 to 14 ounces. Stainless and Inconel builds of similar length often land between 16 and 22 ounces. Rimfire cans are usually 5 to 6 inches and 4 to 8 ounces. Compact 5.56 designs can drop to 4 or 5 inches and under 10 ounces, at a real cost in suppression.

That difference is felt at the muzzle, not on the scale. Hang 20 ounces off the end of a 24 inch hunting barrel and offhand shots get noticeably slower to settle. On a 16 inch carbine used for a carbine class with 400 rounds in a day, a heavy can turns into a shoulder problem by the afternoon. For a bolt gun shot prone off a bipod, the weight penalty barely registers and the extra mass helps recoil manners.

Length is the main lever on sound. Internal volume drives suppression more than any other single factor, so short cans give up performance. A full size .30 caliber unit on a 20 inch .308 with 168 grain match ammunition will typically land in the low to mid 130 dB range at the shooter’s ear. A 4 inch compact on a short barreled 5.56 host can sit in the 140s. Hearing damage risk generally begins around 140 dB for impulse noise, which is why the compact category is best treated as a hearing protection supplement rather than a replacement.

Reading Decibel Claims Without Getting Fooled

Sound data only means something with the full test conditions attached. Ask which barrel length, which ammunition, which microphone position, and whether the testing followed the MIL-STD-1474 protocol. A .300 Blackout can tested with 220 grain subsonic loads around 1,000 feet per second will read dramatically lower than the same can with 110 grain supersonic loads, because the supersonic crack is not something a suppressor can remove. Comparing a left ear measurement from one brand to a muzzle measurement from another produces meaningless conclusions.

The practical test is simpler. Shoot the host you actually own, with the ammunition you actually buy, and judge backpressure and gas to the face alongside the sound. Direct Thread or Quick Detach

Direct thread is lighter, shorter, cheaper, and usually the most repeatable for point of impact. It is slow to move between hosts and can loosen under sustained fire if you do not check it.

Quick detach mounts add roughly 0.5 to 1.5 inches of length and two to four ounces, plus the cost of a muzzle device per host. They earn that back if you rotate the can across a hunting rifle, a carbine, and a trainer. Expect a point of impact shift when you move a can between rifles, commonly a fraction of an MOA to well over 1 MOA depending on the mount and barrel. Confirm zero on each host and record the offset rather than assuming it carries over. HUB compatible rear caps are worth prioritizing, since a 1.375×24 interface lets you change mounting systems later without replacing the whole suppressor.

Materials and Caliber Ratings

Titanium gives the best weight to durability ratio for bolt guns and hunting rifles but has a lower heat tolerance for high round count strings. Stainless is heavier and more forgiving. Inconel and cobalt alloys in the blast baffle are what allow full auto and short barrel ratings on 5.56, where gas temperatures are highest.

Check the minimum barrel length rating before you buy. Many .30 caliber cans are rated to 16 inches for 5.56, while others are approved down to 10.3 or even 7.5 inches. Running a can below its rating is how baffles erode. Same story with magnum cartridges: a can rated only to .308 should not see .300 Winchester Magnum or .338.

Maintenance, Storage, and Transport

  • Rimfire cans are user serviceable and need it. Expect to disassemble and clean every 300 to 500 rounds of .22 LR, since 40 grain lead bullets deposit lead and carbon fast enough to seize a tube if ignored.
  • Centerfire rifle cans are fully welded and sealed. Do not attempt to open them. Carbon fouling on the mount threads is the real maintenance item, so anti-seize on the muzzle device and periodic removal keeps a can from welding itself in place.
  • Store dry. A hot can pulled off a rifle in cold, humid conditions will sweat inside. Let it cool before it goes in a sealed case.
  • For travel, keep your approval documentation with the item, and confirm the legal status in every state on your route before a hunting trip. Rules vary and possession legality does not travel with you.

A Four Question Filter Before You Buy

  1. What is the largest bore diameter and highest pressure cartridge I will realistically feed this?
  2. What is my shortest barrel host, and does the can carry that rating?
  3. Will this stay on one rifle, or does it need to move across three?
  4. How many rounds per range day, and can this material handle that heat?

Answer those four and the field usually narrows to three or four models. From there, compare weight, length, and mount ecosystem. What to Decide Before You Put Money Down

Pick the bore diameter first, the mount standard second, and the weight class third. Treat sound numbers as a tiebreaker rather than a headline. Buy the mount ecosystem you can live with for ten years, because swapping cans is expensive and swapping mounts is not. And whatever transfer path your dealer is using, get the terms in writing and read them before you sign anything.
