Suppressor demand keeps climbing, and most of the buying advice floating around still stops at two numbers: decibel reduction and price. Those are the least useful figures for predicting whether a can will still be serving you in ten years. What actually determines long term satisfaction is material selection, mount design, thread fitment, weight distribution, and how the unit handles heat and fouling across a realistic round count.

Ownership does involve federal transfer paperwork and a $200 transfer tax, and state treatment varies, so confirm your local status before you commit funds.

Start With the Host, Not the Can

The single biggest mistake buyers make is choosing a suppressor first and then trying to fit it to whatever they own. Work backwards instead. List every host you realistically want to suppress, note each thread pitch and barrel length, and build from there.

  • 1/2×28 is standard on 5.56 NATO and most .22 LR and 9mm pistol barrels.
  • 5/8×24 is standard on .308 Winchester, 6.5 Creedmoor, and most .30 caliber rifles.
  • .578×28 and M13.5×1 LH show up on larger pistol calibers and imported hosts.

A .30 caliber can with a 0.308 inch bore will suppress 5.56, 6.5, and .308 hosts. It will not match the sound performance of a dedicated 5.56 can on a 5.56 rifle, because the larger bore bleeds gas past the projectile. The tradeoff is usually worth it. Materials Decide the Duty Cycle

Suppressor construction materials are the clearest predictor of how a unit handles abuse.

  • Grade 5 titanium (Ti-6Al-4V) is light, roughly 40 percent lighter than stainless for the same geometry, and corrosion resistant. It is well suited to hunting rifles and semi-auto use with reasonable strings of fire. It does not tolerate sustained full-auto abuse.
  • Inconel 718 is the choice for short barrels, high pressure, and heavy schedules. It retains strength at temperatures that soften lesser alloys, which matters on a 10.3 inch 5.56 upper where blast chamber temperatures spike fast.
  • 17-4 PH stainless is durable and affordable but heavy, typically adding 4 to 8 ounces over a comparable titanium build.
  • 7075-T6 aluminum belongs on rimfire cans and nowhere near centerfire rifle pressure.

A typical modern .30 caliber rifle can runs 6.0 to 8.5 inches long, 1.5 to 1.75 inches in diameter, and 11 to 18 ounces. A 5.56 dedicated unit often lands near 6.5 inches and 12 ounces. Full-auto rated Inconel builds frequently push past 20 ounces. Every ounce hangs at the muzzle, which changes point of impact shift, swing weight on a hunting rifle, and how quickly you fatigue holding an offhand position.

Mounting Systems and Point of Impact

Direct thread is the lightest and most repeatable attachment method, and it removes an adapter from the tolerance stack. The downside is that it can loosen under vibration and it is slow to remove from a hot barrel. Quick detach systems using a taper mount, ratchet lock, or tri-lug interface let you move one can across multiple hosts in seconds, at the cost of 2 to 4 ounces and one additional mating surface where carbon can build up.

Expect point of impact shift when you mount a suppressor. A well made unit on a concentric barrel might shift 0.5 to 1.5 MOA. Repeatability matters more than the magnitude. If the can returns to within 0.25 MOA of its previous zero after removal and reinstallation, you can build a workable dope card for suppressed and unsuppressed conditions. If it wanders, the mount or the muzzle device shoulder is the problem.

Check muzzle device alignment before you ever fire. A 0.030 inch bore diameter margin sounds generous until a poorly cut thread or an out of square shoulder eats it. Sound Numbers in Context

Published reductions of 28 to 34 dB are common on centerfire rifles. Hearing safe is generally treated as 140 dB at the shooter’s ear, and a suppressed .308 often lands in the low to mid 130s while an unsuppressed one exceeds 165 dB. Bore diameter, barrel length, ammunition, and even humidity move those readings. Treat any single published figure as a data point rather than a guarantee, and always compare numbers taken under the same test protocol.

Maintenance and Fouling

Sealed centerfire rifle cans are not user serviceable and do not need to be. Carbon reaches an equilibrium and the unit keeps working. Rimfire and pistol cans are different. A .22 LR suppressor accumulates lead and unburned powder quickly, and left unattended for 3,000 to 5,000 rounds it can weld itself solid. Take-apart rimfire designs with removable baffle stacks are worth the extra cost for that reason alone.

Titanium tubes should never see harsh acidic dips. Ultrasonic cleaning with a suppressor-specific solution, followed by full drying, is the safe path for serviceable units. Check mount threads and the shoulder each range session, and use a high temperature anti-seize rated above 1,800 degrees Fahrenheit on direct thread setups.

Storage, Transport, and Field Handling

A suppressor coming off a rifle after a 60 round string can exceed 700 degrees Fahrenheit. It will melt a synthetic case liner and scorch a truck bed. Carry a wire mesh cover or a dedicated high temperature pouch. For hunting, plan for the added 6 to 8 inches of overall length in a blind, in a truck rack, and in a scabbard. Store the can dry, separate from the host if you travel, and keep your approval documentation with the item when you cross state lines.

A Five Point Selection Checklist

  1. List your hosts and their thread pitches. Choose bore diameter to cover the largest.
  2. Set a weight ceiling based on your least forgiving use case, usually offhand hunting.
  3. Match material to duty cycle. Titanium for hunting, Inconel for short barrels and volume fire.
  4. Pick direct thread for one host, quick detach for three or more.
  5. Confirm serviceability. Sealed for centerfire rifle, take-apart for rimfire and pistol.
