A well built centerfire can, treated reasonably, can outlast the rifle it was bought for, the owner who registered it, and probably the next two optics mounted above it. That single fact should change how you evaluate one at the point of purchase.
The paperwork side of long term suppressor ownership is real and worth handling with a qualified attorney in your state, but that is a one sentence footnote compared to the equipment decisions you make up front. Buy a can that fits one host rifle and one shooting style, and you have bought a 30 year commitment to a narrow use case.
Materials Decide Service Life
Suppressor construction falls into a few practical tiers, and each one carries a different lifespan.
- Grade 5 titanium (Ti-6Al-4V): the lightest common option, often putting a .30 caliber can at 9 to 12 ounces. Excellent for hunting rifles where every ounce at the muzzle changes handling. Titanium tolerates heat poorly under sustained automatic fire and is generally rated for semi-automatic use with a cooling discipline.
- 17-4 PH stainless: heavier, commonly 14 to 20 ounces in .30 caliber, and far more forgiving of abuse. A good choice for a range rifle that sees 200 round sessions.
- Inconel 718 and Stellite blast baffles: the durability answer. Inconel holds strength at temperatures where stainless begins to soften, which is why it appears in the first baffle of hard use cans and in short barrel 5.56 designs where gas temperature at the muzzle is highest.
- 7075 aluminum: reserved for rimfire and pistol cans. A .22 LR can at 4 to 7 ounces with an aluminum tube and user serviceable baffle stack is a completely different product from a sealed centerfire rifle can.
Full auto rated cans built from Inconel and stainless typically carry an unlimited round count rating from the manufacturer under a stated barrel length minimum. Titanium hunting cans usually carry a caveat about strings of fire. Read the manufacturer’s own specification page before you commit, because that document is the only durability promise you actually own.
Mounting Systems Are the Real Compatibility Question
Thread pitch is where most first time buyers get locked into a corner. The common standards are 1/2×28 for 5.56 and most .22 LR, 5/8×24 for .30 caliber rifles, and 1/2×36 for 9mm carbines. Pistol barrels add 1/2×28 for 9mm, .578×28 for .45 ACP, and metric patterns such as M13.5×1 LH on many European imports.
The HUB standard, a 1.375×24 rear thread, is the single most useful compatibility feature available right now. A HUB compatible can lets you swap between a direct thread mount, a quick detach taper mount, and a three lug pistol mount without buying a new suppressor. If you expect to own the can for decades and rotate hosts, HUB is worth prioritizing over a marginal decibel figure.

Published suppression figures typically show 28 to 36 dB of reduction on a rifle can, putting a 16 inch .308 in the 133 to 138 dB range at the shooter’s ear. Hearing safe is generally cited at 140 dB, so a good can plus subsonic ammunition or a longer barrel puts you into genuinely comfortable territory. Short barreled 5.56 hosts at 10.3 or 11.5 inches run louder and hotter, and that is exactly where baffle material matters most.
Do not choose a can on a single dB number. A three decibel difference on a spec sheet is far less meaningful in the field than tone, first round pop behavior, and how much gas the can pushes back into a semi-automatic action.
Maintenance Across Decades
Centerfire rifle cans are generally sealed and self cleaning. Carbon burns off at operating temperature and requires no user intervention beyond periodic mount inspection. What does need attention:
- Mount torque: check direct thread cans every 100 to 200 rounds. A loosening can is the most common cause of a baffle strike.
- Muzzle device wear: taper mount brakes and flash hiders are consumables. Replace them when the taper shows erosion.
- Rimfire and pistol cans: these require disassembly and cleaning. Lead and unburned powder accumulate fast, and a .22 can left for 3,000 rounds can seize solid.
- Corrosion: after wet weather hunting, dry the can and the thread interface. Dissimilar metal contact between an aluminum mount and a stainless tube in salt air will gall.

Store the can separated from the host with the mount threads lightly oiled or coated with a high temperature anti-seize. A dedicated foam lined case protects the finish and keeps the serialized tube from rubbing. Keep a copy of your approval documentation with the item in a fireproof container, because the record is what proves lawful possession to anyone handling the item later.
