How Steel Gauge and Lock Ratings Decide a Gun Safe

Storage security tends to get treated as an afterthought, purchased last and evaluated least. That is backwards. The container holding your rifles, carry pistols, ammunition, and ownership records is the one piece of equipment that works when you are not there. Recent attention to compromised recordkeeping systems is a useful reminder that the physical and paper side of ownership deserves the same scrutiny you give a barrel or an optic.
This is a specification-driven purchase. Marketing copy on safes leans on gun capacity numbers and bolt counts, which are close to meaningless. The figures that matter are steel thickness, lock certification, attack rating, fire test method, and anchoring.
Steel Gauge Is the First Filter
Gauge numbers run backwards, so lower is thicker. The common consumer tiers:
- 14 gauge, roughly 0.075 inch. Entry-level cabinets. Deters casual access and children, not tools.
- 12 gauge, roughly 0.105 inch. The floor for anything called a safe.
- 11 gauge, roughly 0.120 inch, and 10 gauge, roughly 0.135 inch. The practical mid-market band.
- 7 gauge, roughly 0.187 inch, and 1/4 inch plate at 0.250 inch. Serious bodies, usually 800 pounds and up.
Doors are almost always thicker than bodies, and manufacturers advertise the door. A composite door built from two thin plates with drywall between them is not equivalent to a solid 1/4 inch plate. Ask for body gauge specifically. A pry attack targets the door edge and the frame return, not the center of the door.
Lock Certifications Worth Knowing
Mechanical dial locks are graded under UL 768. Group 2 is the common commercial standard. Group 2M and Group 1 add manipulation resistance, with Group 1 rated for a substantially longer manipulation attempt. Electronic locks are typically listed as UL Type 1. Both formats are reliable when certified. The differences show up over the ownership lifecycle:
- Mechanical dial: no power source, decades of service life, slower to open, requires periodic professional service if the dial gets gritty.
- Electronic keypad: opens in two to three seconds, keypads are field replaceable, and the solenoid is the wear item. Keep a spare keypad if the model is older.
- Biometric: fastest for a bedside handgun container, most sensitive to moisture, cold fingers, and dirt. Always verify it has a mechanical override.
RSC and TL Ratings Explain Real Attack Resistance
Residential Security Container Level I, tested under UL 1037, means the unit resisted a five minute attack by one technician using common hand tools. RSC Level II raises the bar with a longer attack window and a broader tool set. Above that sit the UL 687 commercial ratings: TL-15 and TL-30 describe 15 and 30 minutes of net working time against the door with tools. Most home units never reach that class, and most burglaries do not last that long, but the rating tells you where a product actually sits.
A five minute rating is not weak by itself. Match it to your response reality. If a monitored alarm brings a response in eight to twelve minutes, a Level I container anchored to a slab is a reasonable answer. If you live rural with a 25 minute response, buy heavier.
Fire Ratings and How They Are Measured
Paper chars near 400 degrees Fahrenheit, so fire ratings are written around a 350 degree interior ceiling. A UL 72 Class 350 one hour listing means an independent furnace test held the interior below 350 degrees for that duration. Class 125 protects digital media below 125 degrees and 80 percent relative humidity, which matters if you store drives or backup copies of serial number records.
Many consumer safes advertise a factory test instead, often stated as 1200 degrees for 30 or 60 minutes. That is not the same thing. Read the wording. Also check the door seal. An intumescent seal that expands with heat is what keeps smoke off blued steel and out of scope tubes.
Sizing It Around Real Firearms
Advertised capacity assumes bare rifles with no optics, packed like cordwood. Plan on 50 to 60 percent of the stated number. Useful dimensions:
- A 16 inch barrel AR-15 runs roughly 32 to 36 inches overall depending on stock position. It stores easily in most bodies.
- A bolt gun with a 24 inch barrel and a 3-9×40 scope needs about 48 to 52 inches of clear interior height. Measure under the shelf, not the exterior.
- Interior depth of 20 to 22 inches is standard. A loaded door organizer eats 4 to 6 inches of that and will contact scope turrets.
- A bedside handgun container should have at least 11 by 9 by 3 inches of clear interior. Add a weapon light and a red dot and the footprint grows in every direction.

Anchoring, Weight, and Placement
An unanchored 400 pound safe leaves on a furniture dolly. Anchor through the pre-drilled floor holes with 1/2 inch wedge anchors into a concrete slab of at least 4 inches, or through-bolt into floor joists on a wood subfloor. Place the safe in a corner so two sides are unavailable for prying, and leave the hinge side exposed only if the door uses internal locking lugs, which most do.
Weight tiers to plan around: 400 to 600 pounds for entry units, 700 to 1,000 pounds for mid-tier, and 1,200 pounds and up for heavy bodies. Anything over about 700 pounds usually needs professional delivery, and a second floor placement needs a look at joist span before you commit.
Humidity, Maintenance, and the Long Haul
Sealed steel boxes trap moisture. Keep interior relative humidity under 50 percent. A low wattage warming rod along the floor creates convection that keeps air moving. Rechargeable desiccant canisters work in smaller containers and need oven regeneration every few months. Check bore condition and blued surfaces quarterly. Wipe carbon steel with a light corrosion inhibitor before long storage, especially after a wet hunt.
Maintenance checklist worth running twice a year: cycle the lock 10 times, verify bolt travel is smooth, lubricate hinges with a dry film product, test the override key, confirm the anchor bolts are still tight, and inspect the door seal.
Your Own Records Deserve a Plan
Serial numbers, purchase documentation, optic and suppressor paperwork, and insurance riders should exist in two places, one of them offsite or encrypted. Photograph each firearm with the serial legible, note barrel length and configuration, and keep the file current when you change uppers or add a can. If a firearm is stolen, that record is what makes a report actionable. Store the physical copies in a Class 350 rated container and the digital copies encrypted, not in a plain folder on a shared drive.
A Five Question Buying Filter
- What is the body steel gauge, stated separately from the door?
- Is the lock UL 768 Group 2 or UL Type 1 listed, and is there a mechanical override?
- Is the attack rating a third party RSC listing, or a marketing claim?
- Is the fire rating a UL 72 listing or an in-house furnace test?
- Can it be anchored where you plan to put it, at the weight it ships?
