Serviceability Is a Buying Decision, Not an Afterthought

Most shooters pick a suppressor by weight, length, and sound numbers. Those matter, but they describe the can on day one. What decides whether that same tube is still earning its keep in fifteen years is whether it can be serviced, rebuilt, re-cored, or moved to a different cartridge without being scrapped. Repair and caliber conversion pathways for registered cans have widened in recent years, which means a purchase made today should be judged on its long term flexibility rather than its first range session alone.

Treat the suppressor as a permanent fixture in your safe. A $200 transfer tax, paperwork, and a wait before you can take possession all argue for buying once and buying with an exit strategy. The right question is not just how quiet it is. It is what happens when the mount wears, the end cap gets clipped, or you sell the host rifle and keep the can.

Bore Diameter and the Cost of Overboring

A suppressor works best when the bore is close to the projectile diameter. A .30 caliber can with a .308 or .30 bore run on a 5.56 host still works, and many shooters do it, but expect roughly 3 to 6 dB more at the ear compared to a dedicated 5.56 can with a tighter bore. On a decibel scale, that gap is meaningful because sound pressure is logarithmic.

Reference points worth memorizing:

  • 16 inch 5.56 NATO unsuppressed: roughly 165 dB at the muzzle. Suppressed with a quality centerfire can: commonly 132 to 138 dB.
  • .22 LR from a 16 inch barrel, 40 grain subsonic at about 1,050 fps: roughly 140 dB unsuppressed, frequently 115 to 120 dB suppressed.
  • .300 Blackout 220 grain subsonic at roughly 1,000 fps is among the quietest centerfire options because there is no supersonic crack. The same can with 125 grain supersonic loads near 2,200 fps from a 16 inch barrel will still produce that crack downrange.

NIOSH places the threshold for immediate hearing damage at about 140 dB. That number is the practical dividing line when you are comparing marketing figures between models. A can that lands in the 130s is protecting hearing. One that lands in the 150s is reducing fatigue, not preventing damage.

Thread Pitch and Mount Compatibility

Thread pitch is the single most common compatibility mistake buyers make. The standards you will encounter most often:

  • 1/2×28: .22 LR and 5.56 NATO hosts
  • 5/8×24: .308, 6.5 Creedmoor, .300 Blackout, and most .30 caliber rifles
  • 1/2×36: 9mm carbines
  • .578×28: .45 ACP
  • 13.5×1 LH and 14×1 LH: many imported AK pattern rifles
  • 1.375×24, commonly called the HUB standard: the universal rear mount interface that lets one can accept tri-lug, direct thread, and quick detach adapters

If you want one suppressor to follow you across multiple hosts, a HUB compatible rear is the most valuable feature on the spec sheet. Materials and What They Cost You in Weight

Material selection is a durability and weight tradeoff, not a quality ranking.

  • Grade 5 titanium, Ti-6Al-4V: light, typically 11 to 14 ounces for a 7 to 8 inch .30 caliber can. Excellent for hunting. Lower rate of fire tolerance.
  • 17-4 stainless and 718 Inconel: heavier, often 16 to 22 ounces, and far more tolerant of sustained fire and short barrels. Inconel blast baffles are the standard on cans rated for full auto and 10.3 inch 5.56 hosts.
  • Stellite: used in blast chambers for erosion resistance under heavy abuse.
  • 7075 aluminum: reserved for rimfire only, where pressures and temperatures stay low.

A 12 ounce titanium can on a 6.5 pound mountain rifle changes how the gun handles on a long stalk. A 20 ounce stainless can on a 16 inch carbine used for carbine classes will survive drills that would shorten the life of a lighter tube. Decide by use case, then check the manufacturer’s published barrel length and rate of fire restrictions before ordering.

Sealed vs Serviceable Construction

Rimfire suppressors are almost always user serviceable, and they need to be. Lead, carbon, and unburned powder accumulate fast. Plan on disassembly and cleaning every 300 to 500 rounds of standard velocity .22 LR to prevent baffles from seizing in the tube. Leave it too long and you own a very expensive paperweight.

Centerfire rifle cans are usually fully welded and sealed. Carbon largely burns off at those pressures and temperatures, so no routine disassembly is required. The tradeoff is that when a sealed can is damaged, repair depends entirely on the manufacturer’s willingness and ability to rebuild it. Before buying, confirm three things: whether the manufacturer performs re-cores, whether the mount can be replaced independently, and what a typical rebuild costs.

Pistol cans occupy the middle ground. Most are modular, with a serviceable piston, spring, and booster assembly that wears with use. A replacement piston in the correct thread pitch is a routine consumable on a high round count 9mm host running 147 grain subsonic loads near 975 fps.

A Five Point Checklist Before You Commit

  1. Bore diameter matched to your primary cartridge, with a plan for what secondary hosts you will accept a performance penalty on.
  2. Rear thread interface. HUB compatible if you own more than two hosts.
  3. Minimum barrel length and rate of fire rating from the manufacturer’s own specification page, not from forum consensus.
  4. Rebuild and re-core policy in writing, including whether a caliber conversion is offered on that model.
  5. Weight at the muzzle relative to the rifle’s balance. Add the mount weight, not just the tube weight.

Storage, Transport, and Field Handling

A suppressed rifle no longer fits a standard case. Measure overall length with the can installed before buying a soft case or hard case. A 24 inch barreled 6.5 Creedmoor with an 8 inch suppressor pushes past 48 inches overall, which exceeds many common cases.

Keep your approved paperwork accessible. A copy in the case and a digital copy on your phone covers most situations without exposing the original to damage. Check the rules in any state you plan to travel through before a hunt, since possession rules are not uniform across state lines.

In the field, carbon lock is the enemy of direct thread cans. Remove and reinstall periodically rather than leaving a can torqued on for an entire season. High temperature anti seize on the threads is cheap insurance. For quick detach systems, inspect the locking surfaces for carbon buildup after every few hundred rounds and confirm the can is fully seated before the first shot of a string.

What to Settle Before You Submit Paperwork

Decide the primary host and cartridge, then choose bore diameter. Decide how many rifles the can needs to serve, then choose the rear interface. Decide how hard you shoot, then choose the material. Confirm the rebuild and conversion policy last, because it is what determines whether this purchase is a fifteen year tool or a one rifle accessory. Spending an extra evening on those four decisions is worth more than any sound number on a data sheet.
