Suppressors have become normal equipment on rifles and pistols, and the shotgun has lagged behind for reasons that are mechanical, not cultural. A 12 gauge bore is roughly three quarters of an inch wide, and gas takes the easiest exit it can find. Sealing that much flow while still letting wads, cards, and gas seals pass through without packing the baffle stack is a harder engineering problem than building a 5.56 can.

A shotshell is not a simple cartridge. Under the crimp sits a plastic hull, a metal base, a primer, powder, and a wad cup holding the payload together until it clears the muzzle. Many wads petal open on exit. Some designs add separate over powder cards and gas seals. All of that debris travels through a suppressor that was designed around it or it fouls quickly.

Mounting Starts With Your Choke Pattern

Rifles and pistols thread externally at the muzzle. Almost every modern shotgun threads internally for choke tubes, and that is where a shotgun can attaches. Before you look at price or length, identify your choke pattern. The common families are Beretta and Benelli Mobil, Benelli Crio, Browning Invector, Mossberg Accu-Choke, and Rem Choke. Between them they cover the majority of domestic sporting guns.

Outliers exist. Saiga 12 pattern guns, KGS chokes, and older imports may need a custom adapter or barrel threading work. Several manufacturers offer that service, which adds turnaround time and cost to a project already gated by a tax stamp.

Budget the mount separately unless the maker states otherwise. Some suppressors ship with one choke adapter included and sell additional patterns as accessories. Others quote a bare tube price and leave the adapter entirely to you. Two cans with the same sticker price can land a hundred dollars apart once you are actually shooting.

Ammunition Restrictions Are Not Optional

This is the largest difference between shotgun cans and everything else you own. Rifle suppressors tend to be rated across broad ammunition and barrel length ranges. Shotgun suppressors are not.

  • Every current design is rated for lead shot. Steel is frequently allowed, though often prohibited behind a full choke.
  • High density loads such as tungsten super shot and bismuth are approved by some makers and listed as not recommended by others while long term testing continues.
  • Rifled slugs and slugs without a conventional wad are off limits across the board.
  • Non-typical wad designs used in premium buckshot loads for tight patterning are also excluded.
  • Minimum barrel length scales with shell length. One modular design permits 1 3/4 inch mini shells with no barrel minimum, requires 6 inches for 2 3/4 inch shells, 9 inches for 3 inch, and 12 inches for 3 1/2 inch, with 14.5 inches required across all 20 gauge loads. Another maker allows 2 3/4 inch shells at 7 1/2 inches of barrel, 3 inch at 10 inches, and 3 1/2 inch at 16 inches.

Read the manual for the specific can you buy. A home defense shooter who assumed flite control style buckshot was fine has just built an expensive problem.

Three Design Approaches Worth Comparing

The market is small enough to understand in an afternoon. Three approaches dominate.

Fixed length titanium. One current titanium 12 gauge design runs 8.55 inches, weighs 17.6 ounces, and lists around $1,218 with a mount included. The tube is wide rather than long, which buys internal volume without stretching the sight plane. That geometry matters on a bead sight gun and on a red dot gun alike, because the can sits below your line of sight instead of crowding it. Three choke options, improved cylinder, modified, and full, cover most sporting use. Titanium keeps it tolerable on a 28 inch barrel.

Fully modular baffle stacks. A tubeless aluminum design configures from 3.375 inches and 4.3 ounces up to 12.2 inches and 22.4 ounces, listing near $1,095 without a mount. You choose the tradeoff between sound and length. The cost is thread management. Every joint is a place that can back off under recoil, and shooters running these report retorquing sections between stands. Aluminum also drives the most conservative barrel length and shot type restrictions of the group.

Rod-through modular. A 7075 aluminum and steel design configures from 6 to 12 inches and 13.5 to 25 ounces in 12 gauge at roughly $980, with a 20 gauge version at 4 to 10 inches and 12 to 22 ounces near $890. Both include a mount. Because the assembly is drawn together on a rod rather than stacked on individual threads, nothing loosens while you shoot. The catch is choke changes, which require pulling the front cap and backing the choke out with a choke wrench and an Allen key. Extra rods for alternate lengths run about $125 for a set of three. It also offers the widest choke selection of the group at five sizes including turkey and skeet.

Do Suppressors Ruin Your Swing

Weight at the muzzle changes balance. That is physics and no marketing claim makes it go away. How much it matters depends on the shooter. Someone with 50,000 rounds through one over under will feel a 20 ounce change immediately and dislike it. Someone learning the gun with the can already mounted adapts within a few boxes.

The practical controls are barrel length and suppressor weight. A 28 inch barrel with a 25 ounce modular can is a genuinely muzzle heavy setup. A 24 or 26 inch barrel with a 17 ounce titanium can swings closer to stock. If you shoot registered targets for score, evaluate carefully. If you shoot doves, ducks, upland birds, or casual clays, it is a training adjustment.

Patterning Results Are Reassuringly Boring

Because shotgun cans thread into the choke bores, most integrate their own choke at the front. Those tubes are proprietary rather than standardized. In side by side patterning at 20 and 40 yards, full chokes from different suppressor makers produced results that tracked each other closely, and they also tracked factory chokes from the shotgun maker. Constriction size drove the pattern. Who machined the tube did not.

That does not excuse you from patterning your own gun. Loads respond differently to the same constriction, and the only way to know what your hunting load does through your choke is to put it on paper.

A Simple Selection Checklist

  1. Confirm your choke thread family before shopping.
  2. List the shells you actually shoot, including shell length and shot material, and check them against the can’s published restrictions.
  3. Verify your barrel length meets the minimum for your longest shell.
  4. Decide whether you need modularity or a single fixed configuration you will never change.
  5. Add the mount cost, extra chokes, and extra rods to the base price before comparing.
  6. Weigh the finished package and consider it against your barrel length.

Ownership, Maintenance, and Storage

Shotgun cans foul differently than rifle cans. Plastic wad residue and shot deposits build up, especially near the blast baffle. Sealed welded designs rely on periodic solvent soaking and manufacturer service. Modular designs disassemble for cleaning, which is a real advantage over a long ownership horizon if you shoot heavy volumes of clays.

Torque discipline matters. Before each outing, confirm the mount is tight in the barrel and that any modular joints are snug. Store the suppressor dry and separate from the gun, in a locked container, and keep your approved paperwork copy with the item when you travel. What to Decide Before You Submit the Paperwork

Treat a shotgun suppressor as safety equipment, the same category as eye protection and boots. It reduces the hearing damage you absorb, it protects everyone in the blind or on the station with you, and it protects a dog that will never wear muffs. It will not make a 3 1/2 inch goose load hearing safe on its own, and it will not make a stack of tight competition targets easier. Decide which gun it lives on first, confirm that gun’s choke thread and barrel length, match the can’s ammunition rating to the shells in your vest, and buy once.
